Regular health checks are important for long-term health and welfare of all pets and allow us to take a pro-active role in preventative health care.
We normally carry out regular check-ups as part of the annual booster vaccinations that are recommended for all dogs, cats, and rabbits. This is an ideal opportunity to discuss any aspect of your pet's health or well-being that is of concern to you. If appropriate, further investigation such as blood tests, x-rays, etc may be suggested.
We also perform health examinations at times other than when vaccinations are due. We often recommend more frequent check-ups for pets with chronic problems (ex: heart disease, arthritis). Remember one human year is considered equivalent to seven years for a dog and cat
Vaccination Protocols
Puppies
We routinely vaccinate against Distemper, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus and Hepatitis. The initial course is three injections each two weeks apart. The first injection can be given at eight weeks of age, allowing the puppies to "socialise" from as early an age as possible. Vaccinations are then boosted on a yearly basis.
We also recommend that dogs are vaccinated against Kennel Cough (bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfuenza). This is a highly infectious distressing disease. All dogs that come into contact with other dogs are at risk, not just those going into boarding kennels.
Kittens
We routinely vaccinate against "cat flu", Enteritis and Feline Leukemia. The initial course is two injections three weeks apart. The first injection can be given at nine weeks of age, allowing the kittens to "socialise" at fourteen weeks of age. Vaccinations are then boosted on a yearly basis.
Rabbits
We routinely vaccinate against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease. Both are very serious and fatal diseases and vaccination is highly recommended. We have just started using a new combination vaccine where the initial course is one injection given at six weeks of age. Vaccinations are then boosted on a yearly basis.
